Welcome back! Today is Video #15 of our Yoga Series for building or maintaining an at home Yoga practice and today we look at Standing Hand to Big Toe Posture, or Utthita Hasta Padāṅguṣṭhāsana.
This is the very first standing balance posture in the Ashtanga Yoga Standing Sequence! I’m so proud of how far you’ve already come in your journey towards taking better care of the body and mind you live in! Making the time for self care practices is so important in finding the health, fitness, peace of mind and life balance that we all seek.
In our last Yoga tutorial, we explored the idea of Tensegrity or oppositions of forces in your yoga practice. Although we used Prasārita Pādottānāsana A-D or Wide-Legged Forward Stretch Postures to examine this concept, I hope you will bring this functional tool into todays posture too!
Standing Hand to Big Toe Posture, or Utthita Hasta Padāṅguṣṭhāsana, is a challenging yet rewarding posture that asks for your full focus as you work to balance on one leg and move your standing leg around in space. If you are brand new to yoga, or just generally struggle with balance, don’t worry! I’d demonstrate two modifications in addition to the full expression, so you’ll have two different variations to work with in a modified manner so that you can start wherever you are and begin practicing this posture so that you can eventually enjoy taking the full expression of this posture sequence. But be patient with yourself, balance is hard for everyone. Start with the modifications and work your way up to the full expression over time.
Each tutorial video is here to help you go a little deeper in your understanding of the body mechanics of the movements, and your own body in space. I recommend you watch the video all the way through the first time you watch it so you can fully absorb the lecture portion of the video. And keep your eyes peeled for Video #17, our next practice along/guided class video that takes you from Sun Salutation A – this and the next balance posture. Keep up the great work, you are doing such a great job of taking this time for your self-care. It takes effort, consistency and determination to turn your physical and mental health around, to carve out time in your busy day to do things that are beneficial for you.
